A modern consumer unit is one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades an older home can have.
Older fuse boards often use rewireable fuses and lack RCD protection — the device that cuts the power almost instantly if current leaks to earth, such as through a person. Current wiring regulations expect that protection.
Upgrades are common after a failed EICR, before adding an EV charger, during a kitchen or extension project, or when selling a home. Every circuit is tested once the new unit is in, and you get the certificate for the work.
